Al Thumama Stadium Ready for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar
One of eight stadiums being readied for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, Al Thumama Stadium is unique in that it is situated in a beautiful specially crated park. With 40,000 seats, the stadium will play host to several matches during the competition and, as with all Qatar’s stadiums, will be cooled using solar power.
Qatar has made a great deal out of its efforts to build eco-friendly stadiums and as the first Arab nation to host the World Cup is under the watchful eye of the world. Al Thumama Stadium features a design inspired by the ‘taqiyah’ hat, which is traditionally worn by men and boys in the region and is therefore a unique design.
The stadium hosted the final of the Emir Cup in November 2021, and also a series of games in the FIFA Arab Cup 2021, including a semi-final between Qatar and Algeria. Following the World Cup, the stadium will be reduced to 20,000 seats and part of the site redeveloped. The remaining seats will be donated to other countries. This is in line with what is expected to happen to the other seven World Cup stadiums in Qatar.
The 2022 FIFA World Cup is not only the first to take place in an Arab nation, but also the first to be staged in November and December. The tournament is usually played in the months of May, June, and July, but those months would be too hot in Qatar.
