Nations League 2024 - 2025: Europe’s Battle for Glory

news
Created in 2018, the Nations League is one of the most exciting international football tournaments. Replacing the previously played international friendlies, It brings together Europe's 55 national teams through a highly competitive format featuring promotion, relegation, as well as knockout rounds in its later stages. This was done in an effort to introduce a greater level of competition to international football during the off seasons of international tournaments such as the Euros and the World Cup. History
The general idea for the Nations League was first proposed by UEFA to address the criticisms of international friendlies, which were often seen as lacking intensity as well as competitive value. By introducing greater incentives to compete through trophies as well as the prospect of qualification to tournaments such as the Euros, the Nations League has brought new life to these encounters. The inaugural 2018-2019 edition of the tournament was considered a great success, in which Portugal emerged victorious after beating the Netherlands in the final. Since then, the tournament has grown in popularity, becoming a highly anticipated part of the football calendar for fans and players alike.

Format
At the start of each edition, teams are placed into groups within each of the 4 leagues (A-D) based on their UEFA ranking. Initially, this was made up of 12 teams in A and B, 15 teams in League C, and 16 teams in League D. However from the 2020-2021 edition onwards, this was changed to 16 teams in Leagues A, B, C, and 7 teams in D. Once the group stage concludes, the group winners of League A then go on to play in knockout style matches to determine the Nations League Champion. From the 2024-2025 edition of this tournament, the group runners-up will also take part in the knockouts, participating in a 2 leg Quarter-Final round each playing a different groups' winner. Apart from the knockout stage, there are also the promotions and relegations to look forward to.

Teams can be promoted or relegated between leagues based on their performance. Introduced in the 2020-2021 season, the group winners of League B, C and D are automatically promoted to the next highest league whilst the lowest placed teams in League A and B are relegated to the next lower League. As of the current 2024-2025 season, the two lowest ranked teams in League C will automatically be relegated to League D. Promotion and relegation play-offs have also been introduced, with the third placed teams facing off against the lower leagues runners-up to determine who moves up and who moves down. In League C, the 2 best ranking 4th placed teams will face off against League D’s runners-up. The use of a league based system ensures each team is placed into a line-up of similarly skilled teams, meaning each game will be closely contested. The ability for teams to move up or down these leagues introduces fresh talent, shifting the competitive dynamic and ensuring every edition of the tournament is different to the last.

Quarter-Finals
Following the thrilling conclusion of the league stage of the tournament, the top 2 teams from each group in League A have advanced to the quarter-finals. This will be a 2 leg round with each team playing home and away. The teams taking part are Spain, the Netherlands, France, Croatia, Portugal, Denmark, Germany and Italy. Both legs of this stage are set to take place in March alongside the play-offs.

Spain vs Netherlands
Spain are the team given the highest odds of winning the tournament, with odds of 3/1. This is no surprise given their previous season in the Nations League where they emerged as the Champions. Furthermore, they were also crowned European champions after beating England in the Euro 2024 final. Will Spain emerge victorious once more, or will another team take this honour? In their path stands the Netherlands. They are given odds of 16/1, eager to also prove their might on the grandest stage in Europe.

2nd Leg - Spain vs Netherlands

France vs Croatia
France are another team who could pose a strong threat. Being given odds of 4/1. They have demonstrated their ability to perform at the highest level on multiple occasions, reaching the semi-finals in last year's Euros, as well as reaching the final of the 2022 World Cup and winning it in 2018. And who better to oppose them than the team they beat. Traditionally considered underdogs in the footballing world, Croatia are no strangers to international football. In the 2018 World Cup they reached the finals against France as well as reaching the semi-finals in the last edition of the tournament. They were even finalists in the 2023-2024 edition of the Nations League, where they narrowly lost to current victors Spain on penalties. Despite being given the lowest odds out of the other teams of 20/1, Croatia’s resilience, tactical discipline, and ability to rise to the occasion make them a team no opponent can underestimate, and they will be sure to prove these odds wrong.

Portugal vs Denmark
Portugal, have been given odds of 7/2 to win the Nation's League. Standing in their way on the road to the semi-finals however is Denmark, given odds of 16/1. These two teams last played each other in 2015. Currently, ranked 6th in the world, Portugal have been a strong team in this tournament, winning the inaugural edition of the Nations League back in 2019. Currently, ranked 21st, Denmark has also proven themselves a force to be reckoned with, reaching the semi-finals of the 2020 Euros. This is the first time they have reached the knockout stage of the Nations League, but will they make it a memorable one, or will Portugal come out dominant?

1st Leg - Denmark vs Portugal
2nd Leg - Portugal vs Denmark

Germany vs Italy
Germany are given some of the best odds out of any team, with odds of 4/1 to win the title. Currently, ranked 10th, they have won 4 World Cups and 3 European Championships, making them one of the most successful international teams in the world. They were also finalists in the 2022/2023 Nations League. A great success compared to their questionable World Cup campaign back in 2022. This European footballing giant prepares to face Italy in a thrilling quarter-final clash that is guaranteed to be intense. Currently, ranked just above Germany in 9th, they have been a consistent threat in the football world, winning the 2020 Euros as well as coming 3rd in both the 2020-2021 and the 2022-2023 Nations League. Will Germany reassert their dominance on the international stage, or can Italy’s resilience and tactical knowledge lead them to triumph?

What happens next?
Once the Quarter-Finals have concluded, the winners will advance to the Semi-Finals, set to take place between the 4th and 5th of June. The lineups are between Italy or Germany, who face either Denmark or Portugal, as well as the Netherlands or Spain, who will face Croatia or France. Once the winners of these are determined, the remaining 2 teams will meet in the grand finale on June 8th to determine the ultimate Nations League champion. Alongside this, there will also be the 3rd place play-off to look forward to.
